03 Dec 09 What is functional hallux limitus?
Functional hallux limitus is a mouthful, but is a common problem. Functional means that it is something that only occurs when we are functioning. Hallux is Latin for the big toe. Limitus is the technical term for a limitation in motion. So this means that functional hallux limitus there is a limitation in motion of the big toe when walking. What is unique about this condition is that it only occurs when we are functioning, so when the foot is up in the air the range of motion is normal.
Why is functional hallux limitus important? It is important because the big toe joint is that joint that has to move when we are walking or running as this is the joint that we move the body across the foot when we are moving forward. Think for a moment how hard it will be to walk or move forward if that joint does not move? If the joint does not move, then walking is inefficient and the body has to get that motion from somewhere if it is to move over the foot. In order to get this motion, then other joints will be forced to move more than they should. This compensatory motion can cause all sort of problems and become painful.
Even though functional hallux limitus is a problem of the big toe joint, the symptoms may be elsewhere. Health professionals, such as podiatrists spend a lot of time looking for this problem and using particular kinds of foot orthotics or foot supports to deal with it. It is not difficult to manage, it is just difficult to recognise as the big toe joint is not the painful one.
